This is Ben. Several years ago, Ben was a thirtysomething professional who had “let himself go.” He had been a serious athlete in his younger days and played a number of sports. Post-university, work and life got busy, those active days began slipping away, and suddenly Ben found himself overweight and out of shape. One day, while watching television, Ben was inspired by an Ironman competition. Through determination, hard work and the support of a dedicated team, he started training again and reached his goal of completing an Ironman race. He hopes his story will inspire others like him to follow a similar path back to health and fitness.

Ben is now a member of the Triathlon Pro and Mercury Rising Triathlon club teams. As a youngster, he played competitive baseball within the Oakville Minor Baseball Association. While studying at the University of Waterloo, he was a member of the Waterloo WarriorsLife Saving Team, which won the Ontario and national championships in 2003. Since returning to an active lifestyle, Ben has become a master at setting goals and working to achieve those goals. He went from being an inactive couch potato to completing a try-a-tri, then a 5k, and then Ironman. He has swum in every Great Lake. He lives in Victoria, B.C., with his wife, Meaghan.

Ben enjoys teaching and coaching. In 2013, a girls’ volleyball team he coached won the Halton championships, and they were North Champions in 2012 and 2013. He also coached a boys’ basketball team that became tier 2 North Champions in 2010 and 2011. Ben also increased student participation in cross-country running by 350% in 2012-2013, and students he coached were Intermediate Boys Champs in 2013. In track and field, his students were Intermediate Boys Champs in 2013, breaking school records for the past six years.

Ben’s goals include remaining active, representing Canada in triathlon, and participating in the ultimate Ironman, KONA, Hawaii. As a teacher, he hopes to inspire his students and help them develop a passion for learning and life. He also hopes to obtain his master’s degree and become a school principal.
